Midwifery services include pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum and newborn care.
Many insurance plans accepted.
In California, midwives are specialists in the care of healthy women and babies. We view pregnancy and birth as normal, healthy, family-centered life events. Our model of practice is to work collaboratively with other health professionals such as physicians, lactation consultants, and alternative care providers should maternal or newborn complications develop. Many insurance plans cover the care of licensed midwives.
Informed choice is a fundamental principle of midwifery care. Midwives recognize the childbearing woman as the primary decision-maker in her care and we commit to encouraging families to take on this role by providing time, information and guidance about choices in maternity and newborn care. We anticipate you will also actively seek out other sources of information in order to make informed decisions.
Our first accountability is to you the client. Secondly, we are accountable to our peers, our regulatory bodies, and to the public in order to provide safe, competent, and ethical care. As part of our professional responsibility, we meet regularly with other midwives in the area for peer review and professional development. We are committed to staying current with research on maternity and newborn care to deliver you and your family the highest quality evidence-based care.

Midwifery Model of Care
Individualized Care
Redding Midwifery Group is a partnership and we desire to get to know you before your birth and give you the time you require to meet your needs.
One of the cornerstones of midwifery care is the foundation of a trust relationship between the midwives and their client. Through this foundation of trust our hope is you will approach your birth with confidence and joy.
Prenatal Care
Prenatal visits are conducted out of our quaint clinic space in Redding. The visits we offer are monthly from 8 to 30 weeks of pregnancy; every two weeks from 30 to 36 weeks; then weekly until the birth of your baby. For those choosing home birth, the visits will move to your home on the 37wk and 39th wk to allow us know your home better. For those choosing the deliver at the birth center, visits will remain at the office.
At each prenatal visit you will have ample opportunity to ask questions and have your concerns addressed. Each visit will run 45 to 60 minutes long and we guarantee you will not wait for any of us more than 15 minutes from when you arrive to your appointment.
Prenatal care includes: Urinalysis, blood pressure monitoring, fetal growth checks, fetal heart rate and position and general well-being of mother and baby. These routine assessments play an important role in the prevention and detection of problems that can arise in pregnancy. We also pay close attention to the social and emotional aspects of your pregnancy and transition into parenthood.
All your records are kept on a secure online system, which you may have access to at any time to view your progress notes, lab results and even correspond with your midwives electronically. The system used is ‘Maternity Neighborhood’ and is fully secure, confidential and HIPPA approved.
Your support people and children are welcome to come to your prenatal visits.
Prenatal Education & Doulas
Attending prenatal education classes is recommended as part of your birth preparation, especially for first-time parents. We have brochures for classes available in the community. An ideal time to take prenatal classes is between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.
Doulas are independent support people hired by parents to support and assist them at the birth. Both the medical evidence and our anecdotal experience support doulas as very positive members of the birthing team. We encourage you to use the services of a doula and are happy to refer you to some in our community.
Labor and Delivery
By the time your labor begins, we will be aware of your wishes and plans for this special event. We will have discussed important issues requiring your decision-making as well as what to expect at the time of birth and during the first weeks postpartum.
When your labor begins we will be in touch over the phone to assess where you may be in the process. When you are in active labor, one of us will come to your home (for home birth) or meet you at the birth center to attend to you until the birth of your baby. Following the birth, we will complete the care of you and your baby, and assist with early feeding. We will remain with you until you are stable. This is usually 2 to 6 hours postpartum and is when we will depart or send you home from the birth center.
At your birth we will have a second attendant come near the time of your baby’s arrival. This is to ensure you receive the safest care at the time of delivery. All second attendants are certified and current in CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation.
Postpartum Care
We provide care for you and your baby up to the first six to eight weeks postpartum and remain on-call for you and your baby in case of emergency.
Usually there are three postpartum home visits in the first week after birth. Your three-week and six and/or eight week visits will be at the office. Around six to eight weeks postpartum we will see you and your baby for your last visit and then discharge you both back to your family physician for ongoing care. During this last visit we also offer a full well-woman exam and Pap Smear if you desire.
Parents’ Role and Responsibility
We request our clients be responsible for the health of both themselves and their babies by eating nutritiously, getting adequate sleep and exercise and participating in regular prenatal care. We also request that parents acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for labor and birth, either through prenatal classes or self-education.
A midwife’s care is individualized according to the clients she serves. It is important for you to make us aware of your expectations. In order to be effective as your caregivers, we require that clients keep us well informed of concerns or situations that may affect your care.
Education of Future Midwives
We are proud to give students the opportunity to participate in our practice and to be able to contribute to the future of midwives in this country.
Students bring a wealth of knowledge and experience, which they are keen to share with the clients and midwives. Clients also report they enjoy having students involved in their care and particularly appreciate the students’ enthusiasm for birth and their eagerness to assist the clients however they can.
Midwifery students are honored to attend your birth and will have hands-on roles helping you in labor and learning the art of catching babies.
If you have any questions or concerns about how students will be involved in your care please feel free to discuss this with us at any time.
Lending Library and Videos
The books and videos in the office can be borrowed for a period of 3 weeks. Please be sure to return borrowed materials in good condition and on time so others may benefit from them as well.
Appointment Times
If you must cancel your appointment, please provide as much notice as possible. Please also expect that your appointments may need to be rescheduled from time to time due to the unpredictable nature of a midwife’s schedule. It is important you always keep your contact information up to date so you may be reached for rescheduling.
